Sextant is a doubly reflecting navigation instrument used to measure the angle between any two visible objects. The primary use of a Sextant is to determine the angle between an astronomical object and the horizon for the purposes of celestial navigation. Common uses of the Sextant include sighting the sun at solar noon or Polaris at night (in the Northern Hemisphere) to determine latitude. Sighting the height of a landmark can give a measure of how far the landmark is and, held horizontally, a Sextant can measure angles between objects.

Even today, big ships are all required to carry working Sextants, and navigating officers have regular routines to keep themselves familiar with operating them. Despite all the GPS, gyro compasses and radio communications; at the end of the day, it is an instrument that does not require any electricity or power of any sort to make it work. So, when everything else fail, the Sextant is always there!

People get amazed when they see this kind of product in this modern era. It’s truly a gift for gifted!
